Most tax headaches start months before a deadline, with records that weren't kept up to date. These five habits help keep your books reliable throughout the year.
1. Separate business and personal spending
Use dedicated business bank accounts and cards. Mixed transactions are time-consuming to untangle and can lead to errors in both VAT and corporate tax.
2. Record transactions weekly
Little and often beats a quarterly rush. Weekly recording means questions are answered while details are still fresh.
3. Reconcile every month
Match your books to your bank statements monthly. Reconciliation catches missing entries, duplicates and bank errors early.
4. Keep compliant invoices and receipts
Store tax invoices and receipts digitally alongside each transaction. Without valid documentation, input VAT may not be recoverable.
5. Review a simple monthly report
A one-page summary of revenue, costs, profit and cash takes minutes to read and helps you spot problems — and tax implications — before they grow.
If these habits are hard to sustain alongside running the business, outsourcing your bookkeeping to Lexor can take the routine off your plate.
